We also updated reviews on Amex Gold Delta and Platinum Delta cards due to the increased annual fee on Platinum Delta (from $150 to $195) and the added waived foreign transaction fees and EVM chip.
We have three new reviews this week. Barclays replaced BofA as the new issuer of Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard, which has some improvements over the old product. BofA Spirit MasterCard returns 2-2.5 miles per dollar spent and looks great on paper, but we suggest you do your homework before jumping in. BofA's old Asiana Amex was very competitive with 2 miles per dollar spent earning rate and the new Asiana Amex after 2013 has been an disappointment due to the fact that BofA changed the earning rate on general spending to be 1 mile per dollar spent.

The value of miles/points is always constantly changing and highly personal. That is why we don't usually give out a specific number for the value of miles/points in a certain program. However, when devaluation happens, it is inevitable to talk about it, as we did in the articles covering 2011 Amex MR devaluation as well as early 2013 hotel program devaluation. It looks like 2013 is really a bad year for points and miles collectors, as we have just seen another wave of devaluation recently. We will cover several programs in this article and the one program that takes the hardest hit is no doubt one of our favorite - Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR). Several key UR partners including United Airlines, Hyatt Gold Passport, Southwest Airlines, and Korean Air, are adjusting their redemption rates for next year.
To summarize, we will list our value in cent for each currency. Remember the value is highly personal and your miles may very well vary!
Amex Business Platinum Delta SkyMiles card shares the same features as the personal version of Platinum Delta SkyMiles card. While the regular signup bonus for this card is 30,000 miles (5,000 of them are also Delta MQMs), there is a special offer that gives 55,000 miles, 20,000 of which are also MQMs.
You receive 25,000 miles & 5,000 MQMs after the first use, and an additional 30,000 miles & 15,000 MQMs after you spend $5,000 within 3 months. It is not bad to have 55,000 redeemable miles by signing up a card, and what is more interesting is those 20K MQMs which can be huge for Delta flyers who are working toward status - it puts you almost Silver Medallion (only 5K short) and 40% toward Gold Medallion. Platinum Delta card also has a built-in miles booster feature - spend $25K and get a boost of 10K miles and spend another $25K and get another 10K miles. These booster miles are both in RDMs and MQMs. So if you signup through this offer and spend $50K in a year, you will have a whooping 40K MQMs - 80% toward Gold Medallion without even flying with Delta! The only thing to note is that the first annual fee ($150) is not waived. Recently Amex removed the 1st annual fee waiver on its Platinum Delta SkyMiles cards. Application Page Amex Business Gold 75,000 points offer comes back again and this time for 3 days. T&C says it ends on May 17th. Amex has run this promotion many many times in the past, mostly for just one day. You need to spend $10,000 within 4 months to get 75K points.
Application Page New CardMatch offers: Amex PR Gold Rewards 50,000 points and Amex Delta SkyMiles Gold 45,000 miles2/20/2013 We blogged about the amazing deal of Amex Platinum 100,000 points through CardMatch a while ago - at that time the offers were pulled pretty quickly.
This time, several deals come back and two of them stand out:
You need to go to https://www.creditcards.com/cardmatch/ and input your name and address (you can leave your SSN blank if you don't feel comfortable), then you will be led to a page showing several offers including these two best offers. After clicking the link, you will be directed to Amex official website to start your application. Amex has run this promotion many times in the past. Today it comes back - open an Amex Gold Business Card (if you haven't done so), spend $10,000 within 4 months, and get 75,000 Membership Rewards points which can be transferred into frequent flyer miles (British, Delta, ANA, Air Canada, etc.). The $175 annual fee is waived for the 1st year.
Application page [Update 10/9/2012] Looks like both offers are dead.
[Update 10/5/2012] The original link has stopped working, but here is the new link. Please follow the same steps outlined in the original post. https://www265.americanexpress.com/apisites/microsite-framedapp/apply/delta-gold-skymiles-credit-card/U7-1000-46?offer&affilSiteId=Deltanotlgn&affilCtgyCd=COB&pmcVendorCode=U7&additionalOffer=false &firstName=John&lastName=Smith&membershipNumber=0123456789 [Original Post 9/16/2012] This new Amex Gold Delta offer gives you 70,000 miles (25,000 miles after the 1st purchase and an additional 45,000 miles after you spend $5,000 within 6 months) and $100 credit (if you buy a Delta ticket within 3 months). This offer is targeted; however it seems that there is a workaround to "customize" the offer to yourself. Here is what you need to do: 1. Copy and paste this link to your browser without hitting enter: https://www262.americanexpress.com/apisites/microsite-framedapp/apply/delta-gold-skymiles-credit-card/U7-1000-46?offer&affilSiteId=Deltanotlgn&affilCtgyCd=COB&pmcVendorCode=U7&additionalOffer=false &firstName=John&lastName=Smith&membershipNumber=0123456789 2. Change "John" to your first name, "Smith" to your last name, "0123456789" to your Delta account number, and then hit enter. 3. The form is a little weird. When you click "First Name" it will say "Middle Initial" and you need to provide the later. When you click "Last Name" it will say "Name on Card" and you need to provide the later. After you finish all your information, go to the next step you will see your first name and last name have been correctly displayed. We are not sure if this will work out for everyone so try at your own risk! [Update 9/4/2012] Both offers are gone.
Amex SPG is one of our favorite credit cards and Amex ran the same promotions every summer for several years in a row. It is coming back again - 10,000 points after 1st use and 20,000 additional points after spending $5K within 6 months and the $65 annual fee is waived for the 1st year. You can get both personal and business versions and get a total 60K points. Since we value SPG points more than most airline miles, this is a great deal. If in the past you only received 10K signup points and closed the card, Amex is pretty flexible and will be very likely to give you the 20K difference if you open a new account. Landing page for both cards Personal Card application page Business Card application page Amex has done this type of one-day only offers for its Business Gold Card for a couple of times. And it comes back again. Spend $10,000 within 4 months to get the 75K Membership Rewards points which can be transferred into airlines miles (British Airways, Delta, ANA, etc.) The $175 annual fee is waived for the 1st year.
The application page [Update 6/29/2012] The deal is gone.
Before 6/26/2012, you can get 75,000 points for opening an Amex Business Gold Rewards Card after spending $10,000 within 4 months. In November 2011 and February 2012, there were two similar 75K offers, both of which only lasted one day. 75K is the best deal we have ever seen for Amex Business Gold - so hurry up before it expires. Our previous best deal was 50K which surprisingly is still alive. The application page |
